OBS

Ocean Bottom Hydrophone / Ocean Bottom Seismometer
The OBH/OBS system is used for exploration of the marine subsurface.
Seismic waves generated by earthquakes or artificial sources are recorded. The travel times and amplitudes of the waves are used to determine the subsurface structure.

OBS-Ocean Bottom Seismometer
The OBS system has been designed for 4C seismic measurements at the sea bottom in up to 6000 m water depth. It provides continuos recording over a period of 30 days at 2-ms sampling rate. For seismological applications, the recording period can be extended to 15 months through the implementation of additional battery packs and the long-term Seismocorder Geolon-MLS.

Once the instrument touches the sea floor, a crane arm system is dropping the 3C geophone in about 1 m (optional 3 m) distance to the OBS. Due to the decoupling of OBS-frame and geophone, the seismic noise through sea currents can be minimised.
